MAy 29, 2012 Let the Vacation Begin

The day started early following a very late night. No matter how many days I have to get ready, there never seems to be enough time. Chef Ken bounced out of bed at 5:00 am - he’s a morning person…I am not – and whipped up pecan waffles topped with strawberries. It was a delicious start to a very early morning. My sweet friend Nancy picked us up and took us to the airport at 6:30 – what a sweet friend. We were running a little late, so naturally, one of us got “inspected” going through security. They told us there is a new policy that folks 75 and over no longer have to remove their shoes. However, I guess my dad, who is 79, looked like a very shady character, so they took him aside and “inspected” him from head to toe. We made it to the gate and on to Phoenix with no additional problems, just one dilemma. It was 10:15 in Atlanta and 9:15 at home. Do we eat lunch now or wait until we arrive in Phoenix. We decided at was 12:00 somewhere, so it was okay for us to have lunch!

Cathedral Rocks at Sedona, AZ

We picked up our car and headed out to see some rocks! Our goal was to make it to the Red Rocks State Park in Sedona, AZ by about 4:00, since they close at 7:00. We rolled in about 4:15 and the guy guarding the gate assured us we couldn’t see enough to make it worth our while and we’d have to come back the next day. That wasn’t an option and since he refused to let us in we drove around the areas until we found a beautiful overlook that gave us a perfect view of Cathedral Rock. We happened upon a wonderful little diner and made it out in time to drive up to the local airport to watch the sunset over the red rocks. What a beautiful first day. Tomorrow…the Grand Canyon.
